Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment.

IPM is not a single pest control method but, rather, a series of pest management evaluations, decisions and controls. IPM is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties.

Pesticides are used only after monitoring indicates they are needed according to established guidelines, and treatments are made with the goal of removing only the target organism. Pest control materials are selected and applied in a manner that minimizes risks to human health, beneficial and nontarget organisms, and the environment.

This course has been approved for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by the California Structural Pest Control Board (SPCB) for license renewal. Upon successful completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the different IPM approaches and how to apply each approach.
  • Understand the four components of IPM and how each works together.
  • Understand pest prevention and control of general pests.
  • Explain the principles of Integrated Pest Management and how they apply to termite prevention.
  • Recommend several IPM practices that can reduce the risk of a structure being invaded by termites.
