Pesticides can be important tools in pest management, but by their nature, pesticides are toxic. Pesticide products can pose risks to humans, animals and the environment. Before choosing a pesticide, it is important to read and understand the directions on the product label. This will minimize your chance of having a problem with the pesticide once you use it.

Pesticides are included as part of the IPM strategy, but they must be used with care and with attention to safety. There are certain considerations to keep in mind when using a pesticide, especially in regard to potential harm to non-target organisms.

Understanding pesticides, modes of action, formulations, routes of entry, basic treatment practices, etc. is an important part of effective pest control.

This course is approved for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by the California Structural pest Control Board (SPCB) for license renewal. After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand pesticide toxicity and how to minimize routes of entry.
  • Apply pesticides based upon laws and regulations.
  • Understand how Modes of Action and formulations can be used to help select the best pesticide for each situation.
  • Basic understanding of the insecticide chemical families and how each impacts target pests.
  • Basic ant and roach management techniques.
